Police drop charges against men accused in assault on golfers
Detectives continue looking for four men who attacked pair near South Austin golf course. By Claire OsbornAMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Wednesday, August 16, 2006 Austin police said they are dropping charges against two men whom a witness identified after an attack on a golfer Friday. Aggravated assault charges against Robert Rockwell, 32, and Carl Wayne Wilson, 45, will be dropped because a detective determined that they did not commit the assault, police said. Investigators continued looking for the attackers Tuesday. .
MySpace cowboys
One night this past April, Tom Anderson was surfing MySpace.com, as he does for hours every night, when he spotted a link to something called kSolo on another member's profile page. The service, Anderson learned, lets you record karaoke online and e-mail songs to friends. A karaoke man himself (he used to be the lead singer in a band called Swank), he immediately tried kSolo - playing a scorching anthem called "Cowboys From Hell" by the thrash-metal band Pantera. "It was cheesy but great," Anderson says. The next day, he told his business partner, Chris DeWolfe, to check out the site. Just three years ago, the exchange between Anderson and DeWolfe might have ended there, a failed musician and a frustrated entrepreneur bonding over karaoke. But Anderson and DeWolfe don't just obsessively use MySpace - they founded it.
Paying its (tax) dues
CROWN POINT | The BP Whiting Refinery and Lake County announced the settlement Tuesday of a years-old tax dispute, with BP cutting an $8.8 million check for previously withheld property-tax payments.The settlement will benefit various Lake County taxing districts, including Whiting, East Chicago and Hammond, county Assessor Paul Karras said. BP initially withheld about $12 million in property tax payments to the county from 2000 to 2002, disputing the company's obligation, a county news release states. Most of BP's dispute claims were related to its investments to comply with environmental mandates and regulations.Karras said the settlement helps to ensure all taxpayers in Lake County -- corporate and otherwise -- are held to the same standard."Today's settlement is a reasonable resolution for all of the taxpayers of Lake County," Karras said in the statement.The assessor's office confirmed Tuesday the BP settlement was the second major corporate tax settlement since 2004, when U.S.
Test Drive: 2006 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner Double Cab Longbed
Before they were production vehicles, Tacoma PreRunners were used to check out and get a feel for the course before an off-road race started -- that's where the Pre in PreRunner originates. Toyota wanted the trucks to look sporty and they had to sit higher to do the job, but they didn't have to be 4x4s. The PreRunner looked like a winner with the public so Toyota put it into production -- and it took off. Tacoma PreRunners still have a higher ground clearance chassis and a little sportier styling than other 4x2 Tacomas. They're equipped with a beefed-up suspension and larger brakes borrowed from their 4x4 counterparts. It's a pretty good tradeoff -- a truck that's more affordable and more fuel efficient than a 4x4, but with some of the features that make a 4x4 attractive. Summer camps pack technology into life lessons
Kids spending part of their summer at camp may have to let go of their iPods, cell phones and other electronic goodies for a while, but they still won't be far from the high-tech world. Day and resident camps around the country are integrating technology into their curricula while focusing on developing life skills through innovative programs. At YMCA Storer Camps in Jackson, Mich., activities range from using global positioning for underwater exploration to tree climbing high in a forest canopy to learn about the ecosystem. The programs represent a paradigm shift, according to Glen King, vice president of camping, which will forever alter the prevailing image of campfires, nature hikes and Kumbaya' and marshmallows. He described today's camp as a proving ground for future success.
